Weight Loss

By Dr. LL McKay

At the start of each year, many of us make resolutions, hoping to lose weight and reach some magic number on the scale. With the help of IHC’s weight management program, Marg was able to stick to her New Year’s resolution and is now living the life she had hoped for.

For the past four years, I have been actively involved in counselling patients on weight loss and the biggest joy often comes from “non-scale victories”.  Most patients are referred for help with their weight and/or management of chronic diseases.  After working with these people over time, it’s clear that non-scale victories bring them the greatest sense of accomplishment.

My favourite moments are things like seeing a patient put on their socks after not being able to reach their own feet for 10+ years.  I love being able to reduce or eliminate medication for patients who feel they’re doomed to take pills for the rest of their lives.  I smile when patients gush about being able to fly for the first time without requiring a seatbelt extender.  These are the things that keep me smiling at work every day: seeing patients feeling fantastic and confident as they make changes in their health through weight loss.  It’s obvious it’s more than just a number on a scale to them.  It’s changing their outlook and helping them achieve goals they never thought possible.

MJ (pictured) is a patient of my weight loss program who struggled with weight issues practically from birth. “I grew up with a health condition that limited physical activity,” MJ explained. After many failed diets and learning she would need knee replacement surgery, MJ sought my help. “I have never looked back,” MJ said. “I have lost 89 pounds to date, all the while living my life to the fullest!” MJ now approaches food in a completely different way, having learned how to enjoy without overindulging. “My kids and grandkids are in awe,” MJ said. “As a widow, I am all they have. So, I knew it was necessary for me to make this change.”
