Understanding a Stroke

Types of strokes
The type of stroke depends on its location in the brain and the severity of the stroke itself. There are two types of stroke: Ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.
Ischemic Stroke
These strokes happen when a blood vessel the brain is blocked. Blockage of the blood vessel can happen for a variety of reasons, fatty deposits in arteries can cause blood clots to form or sometimes a blood clot formed in the heart due to an irregular heartbeat can travel to the brain.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
These strokes happen when a blood vessel is weak and there is a rupture. This causes the blood vessel to bleed into the brain. This can because of an aneurysm (ballooning of a weak blood vessel) or arteriovenous malformation (when the arteries are abnormally formed).
